Matthew Covert
Matthew Covert is a seasoned trial attorney with extensive experience handling high-stakes criminal and investigative matters. Prior to founding the firm, Mr. Covert was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia for over five years. At the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mr. Covert investigated and prosecuted hundreds of criminal cases, including those involving first-degree murder, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. He tried approximately a dozen cases to verdict and litigated another dozen on appeal before the D.C. Court of Appeals and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, presenting oral argument in four of those cases. His success in the courtroom and reputation as a strategic, dynamic advocate earned him three Special Achievement Awards during his tenure as a federal prosecutor.
Prior to his government service, Mr. Covert was an associate at the Washington, D.C. office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, where his practice focused on white collar criminal defense, internal and government investigations, congressional investigations, False Claims Act litigation, and sports litigation. Mr. Covert represented both entities and individuals—including C-suite executives—facing criminal charges brought by the Department of Justice and regulatory actions initiated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. In the investigations space, he led or assisted with sensitive internal probes for universities, professional sports teams, and other high-profile organizations, while also representing professional athletes and sports executives in various litigation matters. Mr. Covert's representative matters include:
-
Representing two former executives of a large medical supplies organization in connection with parallel civil, criminal, and internal investigations by the SEC, DOJ, and a prominent international law firm
-
Representing a former professional tennis player and owner/operator of a major professional tennis tournament in litigation against a leading governing body in the sport
-
Representing a financial executive in connection with a fraud investigation by the SEC
-
Representing high level private sector and government officials in connection with confirmation hearings and congressional investigations
-
Conducting multiple internal investigations on behalf of a professional sports franchise in connection with various compliance matters, including discrimination and harassment allegations
-
Conducting an internal review of past practices at a major university's athletic department in connection with highly publicized civil litigation.
Today, Mr. Covert brings this breadth of experience to his representation of clients facing government scrutiny, internal risk, or complex litigation. Known for his clarity, sound judgment, and personal investment in every matter, Mr. Covert is a trusted advocate when the stakes are high, and the path forward requires skilled execution.
